Driver Safety Training

Safe Driver Awareness Program Training Requirements

Insurance & Risk Management sponsors a “Safe Driver” Awareness Program for employees, students, faculty, staff, etc. required to drive a vehicle to perform their job requirements. This program educates drivers on safe driving practices, the consequences of poor driving habits, defensive driving, and the role of individual driver behavior. IRM remains committed to providing safe driving practices and outreach programs to mitigate risk, lower the frequency of vehicular collisions and reduce campus liability. UCLA’s Defensive Driver Training Programs are the principal method to comply with Cal-OSHA’s Injury and Illness Prevention Program for those employees who drive. For all other Driver Safety Training, please send us an email

Insurance & Risk Management uses the Smith-System Driver Training program, also used at other UC campuses.  To maintain consistency and continuity in our safe driving practices approach, IRM’s goal is to have all UCLA drivers trained in the Basic principles of the Smith-System. Modules are assigned based on the 3 primary Driver Categories listed below:

The Online Arrive Alive series is a collection of 12 whiteboard videos that last between 3 and 7 minutes each. These short modules focus on critical and relevant driver safety topics, regardless of the type of vehicle or the frequency in which driving happens. Employees can take all modules at one time or take individual modules over the course of a few visits. At the end of the training, trainees can print a Smith System certificate of completion.

Motorized Cart Online Training (Golf, LSV, NEV etc.) – 75 minutes

This online module focuses on the proper use of these unique vehicles. This training takes about 75 minutes to complete. By the end of the training, attendees should be able to:

Prepare to drive by ensuring proper authorization, equipment check and make any adjustments

Drive the cart properly and safely

Stopping, cornering and parking

Reporting of any damage or broken parts

At the end of the day, trainees receive a Smith System certificate of completion, a Driver’s Study Guide, written performance evaluation and recommendations to practice to develop safe driving habits.

Post-Collision Refresher Training – 75 minutes

This training is conducted for employees who were operating a vehicle while in the course and scope of employment, and were involved in a preventable auto collision. Training can be delivered in a classroom or through ZOOM. Training is designed to promote safe driving practices, reduce auto collisions and prevent reoccurrence. The course covers basic causes of auto collisions, identifying contributing conditions, and emphasizing defensive driving strategies. A review of the circumstances associated with each attendee’s collision is part of the curriculum.
